This spring, CERL has an exciting line-up of events and speakers. Please feel free to forward this information to anyone interested in these events, and as always, please RSVP if you plan to attend. All events will take place at Penn Law School.

Thursday, March 15: CERL Book Talk. Mark Fallon presents his book “Unjustifiable Means: The Inside Story of How the CIA, Pentagon, and US Government Conspired to Torture”
The author will be in discussion with Retired Brigadier General Steve Xenakis and former General Counsel of the Navy Alberto Mora. Moderated by CERL Faculty Director Prof. Claire Finkelstein. Lunch will be provided, and books will be on sale. 12:00pm – 1:15pm in room Silverman 147.

 

Friday, March 16: “Legal Responses to the Opioid Addiction Crisis”
This one-day conference consist of two parts. The morning session is by invitation only; the afternoon session is open to the public, and includes high level speakers who will address difficult questions regarding the ethical and legal ramifications of persistent opioid prescription within the last few years. How are the current laws and regulations addressing the crisis? Are they adequate, or do we need additional policies and legal solutions to help curb the widespread abuse? 1:30pm – 7:30pm, Michael A. Fitts Auditorium, Golkin Hall 100. Cocktail reception to close.

 

Monday, March 19: CERL Book Talk. Luke Harding presents his NY Times #1 Bestseller”Collusion: Secret Meetings, Dirty Money, and How Russia Helped Donald Trump Win”
Moderated by NBC political reporter Lauren Mayk. Harding served asThe Guardian’s Moscow bureau chief for four years before being thrown out of the country for his critical reporting on Vladimir Putin’s government, and his book has become important reading in light of the continually unfolding drama surrounding investigations into the Trump election campaign. Books will be on sale. 4:30pm – 7:30pm in Gittis 1.

 

Thursday, April 5: Public Keynote on “The Weaponization of Outer Space: Ethical and Legal Boundaries” with Major General David D. Thompson, Air Force Space Command
Moderator TBD. This public keynote event launches our spring roundtable conference on the weapnonization of outer space, which is by invitation only. More information can be foundhere. 5:00pm – 6:30pm, Michael Fitts Auditorium.

 

Thursday, April 19: CERL Book Talk. Authors Oona Hathaway and Scott Shapiro discuss their book”The Internationalists: How a Radical Plan to Outlaw War Remade the World”
Moderator TBD. “This book will change the way we view the history of the twentieth century—and how we must work together to protect the global order the internationalists fought to make possible.” Books will be on sale. 4:00pm – 5:30pm in Silverman 245A.
